Since there was a rare exhibit at the Sunshine Aquarium in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, I decided to check it out. The limited-time nighttime event, called “The Return of the Sex Exhibit”, is just as its name suggests—a special exhibition dedicated to the sex and reproduction of various creatures.
In addition to the usual aquarium displays, this unique exhibit is set up to focus specifically on animal reproduction, creating an atmosphere that is both fascinating and quirky. The audience was about 90% couples, so if you go solo, it might feel a bit awkward for some.
Hotel-Inspired Displays
At the entrance, there was a guideboard inspired by the familiar type used in hotel lobbies for room selection.。
Pink Lighting
Inside, the lighting was entirely tinted pink, adding to the distinctive atmosphere of the exhibit.
Sleeping Animals
Of course, the content of the exhibit doesn’t mean anything to the aquarium animals themselves. Seeing them asleep adds a different charm to the experience.
Models of Various Animal Penises
In the center was a model of an elephant’s penis—it almost looked like a trunk. There were others, too, some spiral-shaped or forked. The shapes and sizes were as diverse as the species themselves.
Sofas in the Jellyfish Zone
The jellyfish viewing area featured a sofa set up as a photo spot. A line formed as visitors waited to sit on the sofa for commemorative photos. Since the exhibit theme is somewhat risqué, it felt just a bit embarrassing to ask the people in line behind you to take the picture.
Peeping Room
Toward the end of the indoor exhibits was a Japanese-style room setup. By peeking through small holes in a shoji screen, visitors could watch animal mating behaviors. It was amusing to see a long line of couples waiting for their turn to peek.
Comparisons with Other Species
There was also a section where visitors could find animals that resemble their own “styles.”
“Kawatabukuro” Starfish
Finally, an unexpected appearance by a starfish. If your mind isn’t exactly pure, you might think it resembles something… else.
