Hue, known as Vietnam’s ancient capital, is a popular city for tourists exploring the ruins of former dynasties. However, Thuy Tien Water Park is an unconventional attraction that appeals to those with a taste for adventure. News confirmed that the park will be demolished in 2024 (Reference: Viet-Jo News). The iconic dragon structure, a major highlight, is also scheduled for demolition. This post is a look back on the site, featuring photos from the summer of 2023.
Getting to Thuy Tien Water Park
Thuy Tien Water Park is located deep in the mountains, about a 30-minute drive from central Hue. Access by public transport is unavailable, so renting a motorbike is necessary for the journey.
The Dragon Structure on Thuy Tien Lake
Themed around “water,” the park once housed an aquarium inside the lake-top dragon structure, allowing visitors to learn about aquatic ecosystems. Built in 2004 with Russian investment, the park eventually closed due to low visitor numbers. There are discussions by Hue authorities on repurposing the site, which may allow future public access.
Inside the dragon structure
Inside the dragon, the aquarium tanks and glass windows are shattered and scattered. The paint on the walls has faded over time, giving the space a hauntingly beautiful, abandoned aesthetic.
The Pool
About a 15-minute walk from the dragon structure, to the west of the lake, a pool area once bustling with activity now lies hidden within the forest, with trails overgrown and reclaimed by nature.
The Mysterious Car Object
A mysterious car sculpture of unknown concept sits near the park. Though one can fit into the narrow driver’s seat, it’s not ideal for photos.
