Ha Long Bay Cruise Tour

Ha Long is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northern Vietnam. Ha Long Bay is characterized by its limestone karst formations, with approximately 1,600 islands and unique rock formations scattered throughout the bay. These geological features were shaped over millions of years through erosion and weathering, creating a breathtaking landscape.

At the beginning of 2025, I joined a Ha Long Bay cruise tour. The one-night cruise allowed me to experience the stunning scenery up close, where the emerald-green sea and the towering rock formations changed color with the shifting sunlight—a truly luxurious experience.

The tour included visits to magnificent limestone caves, a kayaking experience, and a stop at Ti Top Island. Among the highlights were Thien Cung Cave and Sung Sot Cave, both must-see attractions.

The View of Ha Long Bay at Night

At night, Ha Long Bay transforms into a mesmerizing spectacle. The lights from cruise ships reflect off the water and the surrounding islands, creating a dreamlike and enchanting atmosphere. The gentle glow flickering on the emerald sea enhances the bay’s natural beauty, making it a truly unforgettable sight.

The Port Town Where Cruises Depart and Arrive

The main port town for Ha Long Bay cruises is Ha Long City, particularly Tuan Chau Marina and Hon Gai Port. These ports serve as the gateway to the bay, bustling with cruise ships, tourists, and waterfront activities. Tuan Chau Marina, the most popular departure point, features modern facilities, restaurants, and entertainment options, making it a convenient and lively starting point for a Ha Long Bay adventure.

Another highlight of the cruise is the dining experience on board. Guests can enjoy authentic Vietnamese cuisine, with a focus on fresh seafood, while admiring the breathtaking scenery of Ha Long Bay. The combination of delicious food and stunning views makes for an unforgettable dining experience.

Ha Long Bay is also rich in ancient legends. Its name means “Descending Dragon,” based on a myth in which a mother dragon and her children descended from the heavens to protect Vietnam from invaders. The dragons repelled the enemy, and the jewels they spat from their mouths formed the many islands scattered throughout the bay.

In addition to its mythical origins, Ha Long Bay has a long human history. It is believed that people inhabited the area as early as the Neolithic period, around 7,000 years ago. In more recent centuries, the bay served as a hideout for pirates and a strategic military base during the Mongol invasions.

On the cruise, you can enjoy the luxury of watching the sunrise and sunset from the water. The sight of the sun casting golden hues over the emerald sea and limestone islands creates a breathtaking and unforgettable experience.

Many of the islands in Ha Long Bay feature limestone caves, where visitors can explore stunning stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. These natural formations create a mesmerizing and otherworldly atmosphere inside the caves, making them a must-see attraction for those exploring the bay.
